*Warning to parents: some of the following pictures are of real operations and births and may be unsettling to young children.*
One of the most exciting parts of being involved in breeding dogs is the arrival of puppies...
Especially when there are no complications and the moms pop them out without any problems...
Like Rosey, who defied our wishes that she use the nicely prepared (and dis-infected) puppy pen that we had her in. In the 10 minutes that it took Elyse to go up- stairs, to see her parents, Rosey escaped from the puppy pen and had one puppy already born in the old dog bed under the sewing table.
...but that is where she was most comforable to bring her three boys into the world. They never suffered a bit,  for they turned out healthy and robust.
Then there was Tessa who just wouldn't push so we called the Vet and he said to meet him at the clinic. When we parked the truck, why Tessa had decided to push and her first boy was poking his head out!!
So after a little check-up in the back seat of our truck, Dr. C turned us around and sent us home, cause everything was just fine; He was right, after she figured out how hard to push, she had three beautiful boys and no problems at all.
Sometimes even when 'mom' has no problems giving birth, the problems come later. Like when the pups are premature and don't live. That is sad for everyone. In this case Cookie gave birth to 4 but only 2 were strong enough to survive.
Then what all toy dog breeders must face...a C-Section...
Hunny Bun's labour had started and sufficient time passed but still no puppies so we 'scooted' to the vet, and sure enough there were three pups and her pelvic opening was too small to allow the heads through. So she had a C-section.
...the incision was made and the uterus  poked through....
... the uterus, shaped like rams horns with the puppies inside...small prick and it starts to rip open...
..lets have puppy number 1, shall we?...
...puppies are immediately given to the warm hearts and eager hands of the clinic staff and they go to work reviving and cleaning the puppies...
...and pretty soon they are squaking like any other newborn pup.
After mom gets stitched up, she starts to wake up and the pups are presented to her as soon as possible. Some moms like Hunny Bun accept her newborn pups right away and start to clean and nurse them even while she is a little drousy.
...but then there are moms, like Pixie, who came out of the operation and couldn't figure out what those sqeaky little  'mouse size critters' were and didn't want to be near them, especially while she was sore and groggy. So we had to sit with her and hold her still for them to nurse and we had to help the pups 'pee and poop'. All the things the mother would do for the new babies.
A full 24 hours later she sniffed them and decided they were hers and for the next 20 minutes she cleaned them until they were sqeaky clean. From then on she was one of our best moms!
AHH ...but the end results are a gorgeous healthy puppy, and the breeder immediately forgets the sleepless nights, the long labours and the incredible vet bills.
Then when the right, wonderful, loving human comes along we're happy to see the puppy leave for its new home because we just know it will have the best life ever.
